William Lyons writes, “I am a transportation planner, frequent bike rider, and was a member both of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Transportation Policy Committee, which recommended walk and bike improvements for a sustainable transportation system, and the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Portsmouth Bike and Pedestrian Plan, which identified Middle Street as a key component of a walk and bike friendly future”, and he writes a compelling letter to the editor about the process behind the Portsmouth Middle Street Bike Lane.
“The project should not be approached in isolation, but as a major investment in our connected future, for example, anticipating growth in the West End and Lafayette Road corridors. I hope the City Council will support the PSTC (Parking and Traffic Safety Committee) recommendation so we can move ahead with the Plan’s vision thru connecting designated streets, school safety training, signage, and maps. We can then proudly claim to be a walkable and bikeable city.”
Here’s hoping the Portsmouth City Council follows the recommendations of the professionals and people invested in the process.
